About Acworth, Georgia
Located in Cobb County in northwestern Georgia, the city of Acworth is situated upon Lake Acworth and Lake Allatoona. With a population of close to twenty thousand residents, Acworth is a densely populated area located within the Atlanta Metropolitan district. While Acworth is close enough to Atlanta to offer up the amenities of urban life, it is also far enough removed for those who want the genteelness and silence that rural living can offer; especially for people who love nature and the outdoors.

Called ‘The Lake City’, Acworth is a gentle blend of both rural and urban flair; and with such a rich history, it’s no wonder that Acworth is growing by the year. The Main Street of Acworth is an old Native-American trading route, refurbished in the early 1920’s. Colloquially known as the ‘Dixie Highway’ the trading route was replaced in later years by Interstate 75 and Highway 41.
Acworth offers southern hospitality and a city’s charm thanks to a steadily growing population and its location close to Atlanta. It’s possible to enjoy the shopping in historic downtown Acworth and to enjoy genuine southern cooking.
Most of the city was destroyed by General Sherman’s Union Army during the American Civil War, with only a few buildings being spared. The Union Troops nicknamed Acworth “Little Shanty” during their occupation.
Interestingly enough, downtown Acworth’s architectural design is still strikingly reminiscent of how buildings were constructed in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Another great example of Acworth’s cultural legacy is the Cowan farmstead, originally constructed in 1854. The farm survived Union occupation through the Civil War and is a great example of pre-Civil War plantation architecture and in 2001 was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
One of the very oldest instances of historical Acworth is the Liberty Hill Cemetery – it has survived for more than two hundred years, with the first graves being dug as far back as 1799; and the Liberty Hill Baptist Church was erected in 1840. Though the original building was destroyed by General Sherman’s army during the Civil War, it was rebuilt in 1866, though the building was later sold to private interests…it is still maintained by the city of Acworth and stands as a legacy to Acworth’s historical importance. Another church founded in 1864, the Bethel AME Church is classified as a Romanesque Revival-style building, and it originally shared a building with the Zion Hill Baptist Church. Bethel AME was added in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
Families or individuals thinking about moving to Georgia would be well advised to consider Acworth as a destination – not only for the city’s friendly and welcoming atmosphere, but for the low crime rate, the neighborly residents, and the down-home atmosphere that southern living can offer.
